Great Anti-Bullying PSA from Burger King: Stand Up Against Bullying

@NoBully_org
In case you missed it, Burger King created a great anti-bullying video a few months ago. It's a powerful video that is great to show to students and adults. Follow up conversations based on the video would be very powerful. Their campaign has been called "Bullying Junior" and is part of the No Bully website and campaign.

In this PSA they encourage individuals to take a stand against bullying. The video is powerful in part because it shows some adult bystanders watching and doing nothing while a high school student is bullied by others in a Burger King restaurant. However, these same adults have no problems reporting their damaged ("bullied") burgers to the restaurant management. The PSA also shows and interviews two adults who take a stand to stop the high schooler from being bullied. A number of students are also featured to add to the video's relevance for a K-12 audience.

Unfortunately the original video (with 4.5 million views so far) has a couple  censored expletives. I'm disappointed that Burger King and No Bully chose to include these in their original released PSA and I wrote them to let them know. I would like to see them replace their posted version on YouTube with the clean version they added available for download here on their website. I embedded the clean version above. Regardless, the overall intent and video is excellent and well worth using to help everyone reflect on the effects of bullying and important role of bystanders.

Join Us This October: Focusing on Using Technology with Kindness

Like last year, Minnetonka Schools are planning events for Kindness in Chalk Day (Monday, October 3),  National Cyber Safety Month and National Bully Prevention Month.  Last week at its first quarterly meeting, our District Digital Health & Wellness Committee met and discussed ways to merge these events and themes into one. We decided to focus our October efforts on treating one another kindly through our use of technology

Staff at each site are planning events to help remind students of the importance of using technology appropriately and positively. On Monday, October 3, most sites will have student leadership groups meet before school to write positive messages on sidewalks before buses arrive with students for the day. Students will learn anti-bullying lessons in classes and teachers will have discussions with students in classrooms about using technology with kindness. There will be many more events that take place and we look forward to see all the things that happen this month to remind students and our community on using technology positively.

One of the things I talk about with students when I travel around the state speaking is the importance of using technology with empathy, compassion, and integrity. As you have discussions with your students and/or children, consider these words and their definitions. Reflect on how they help us to focus on using technology with kindness:

Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

Compassion is having sympathy and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others.

Integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. Furthermore, consider the explanation below of integrity from Amy Rees Anderson on Forbes and how important it is to think carefully about how we use technology:
"Integrity means doing the right thing at all times and in all circumstances, whether or not anyone is watching. It takes having the courage to do the right thing, no matter what the consequences will be. Building a reputation of integrity takes years, but it takes only a second to lose, so never allow yourself to ever do anything that would damage your integrity."

Great Leader/ship Wisdom from Bill George: Finding Your True North

Last week former Medtronic CEO Bill George spoke at Minnetonka High School about leadership. His talk was geared toward high school students, but many parents, community members, and business professionals were present as well. He did a nice job sharing his wisdom and ideas not only about leadership, but life in general. He encouraged the students to make the most of their lives, emphasizing that life is precious and you only have one life to live. He spoke about the importance of having a mission in life, doing what you are both good at and what makes you happy. He explained that this inner self is your True North.

Bill shared that many leaders who he met did not have a purpose, or postponed their purpose for promotions, wealth, status, power, and other things that didn't make them happy. He encouraged the students to do something that helps others. He repeatedly talked about being a servant leader, thinking about the customer or individuals who are affected by the work you do and the decisions you make. Bill also explained how the best leaders also care and serve the individuals and teams who they lead, encouraging them and caring for them, in turn making them better. It was great to hear such care and empathy expressed by a CEO. I hope the students will go on to become great leaders with integrity and compassion.

I didn't write down everything he said, but did Tweet a few of his comments and quotes that I really liked.  I've Storified them below, and hope you gain further insight into Bill's advice by reading them:
